TYPES OF PEARL AND ITS COLOR


The pearl gemstone is considered to be one of the most beautiful types of gemstones and it is certainly no wonder that plenty of people love to wear them or buy them for their own collection. Also known as the moti stone, they come in a large number of colors and types. Here is a look at the different types of pearl types that you must know about.  

White Pearl 

The white color of Pearl stone is associated with purity, honesty, and respect.  White pearls are ideal in pearl jewelry. White pearl stone necklace has been a hallmark of perfection and beauty. There are 3 Types of white pearl, for example, Akoya Pearl, Akoya Pearl, and Freshwater Pearl.

Akoya Pearl

Akoya Pearls are the most well-known variants of white pearls, which is why they are often referred to as classic pearls. They are mainly found along Japanese coasts and can be found in shades of white, silver, cream and ivory with a slight hint of classic French Vanilla. Akoya Pearls are also cultured in China and Vietnam. The saltwater oyster Pinctada fucata martensite is used for culturing Akoya Pearls. 

Freshwater Pearl

The Freshwater Pearls are known for their softer luster, smooth shapes and distinct pastel colors like lavender, pink and peach. There are also plenty of freshwater pearls that have got a unique baroque shape which has earned them the name of baroque pearls. 

They are budget-friendly when compared to some other types of pearls. You can find them in various colors like rose, different hues of pink; silver; cream; cool, bright white as well as ivory. The white freshwater pearls can be considered as the second most well-known variant of pearls. They are cultured mainly in China with Hyriopsis cumingii pearl mussel. These pearls may range in size starting from about 2.0 to 3.0mm and go up to 11.0 to 12.0mm and even larger.

South Sea Pearl

The South Sea Pearl has an impeccably round form and is extremely valuable. They can come in a number of different colors such as white, rose, light gold, pink, silver cream, and ivory. They are mainly cultured in Australia with Pinctada maxima saltwater oysters. 

Black Pearl 

Dark and exotic black pearl stone has captured the imagination of women and men. Black pearls are hundred times rarer than golden and white pearl gemstones. Black Pearls are the rarest color of this stone. They have higher the luster of a Pearlstone. According to mythology, black pearl is associated with wealth and peace in life.

Tahitian Pearl

Tahitian Pearls come in vivid, dynamic shades of black, brown, green, gold, etc. You can get them in numerous different hues such as jet black, pale dove grey, and dark charcoal grey. The most popular overtones for these Tahitian Pearls include cherry, peacock, blue-green and neutral silver/steel. 

They are cultured in a type of saltwater pearl oyster called Pinctada margaritifera in French Polynesia. The sizes may range from about 8.0 to 9.0mm as well as from 14.0 to 15.0mm and even larger. 

While Tahitian Black Pearl is extremely popular, you can also find Black Akoya Pearls, Black Sea of Cortez Pearls and Black Freshwater pearls in the market. While the Sea of Cortez Pearls are mainly cultured in Mexico and may have blue-green, green, violet, gold, rose, mink and mauve overtones, the Black Akoya Pearls are cultured in China and Japan and have a midnight blue or greenish blue-black overtone.   

Apart from the types described above, you can also find pearls in various other colors such as golden, pink, peach, lavender, blue and chocolate. There are also multi-colored pearls that are mainly cultured in Tahiti.

Pearl gemstones are also popularly known as Moti stone. Natural pearls are the world oldest gems and found in the deep-sea oyster beds. Owing to pollution of the seas and global warming in recent times, it is now difficult to get natural pearls since they are found only in clean seas with stable climatic temperature. Natural pearls today are therefore rare and found only in the seas off Australia and Bahrain.

Because of its rarity and very high price, the market today is having a great demand for cultivating and synthetic pearls in the huge Jewellery market.

The most expensive pearls are the south sea pearls which can go up to more than $100,000. Freshwater pearls are the cheapest and comes between $50 to $2000.

Pearls owing to their beautiful white color were considered as a mark of purity.  This gemstone was known to be worn by ladies of the royalty and thus considered as a symbol of elegance and class.

This gemstone is commonly worn in Jewellery as it comes in a variety of colors with pure white color in great demand.  Astrologically, pearl is associated  with the zodiac sign Cancer and the planetary movement of the moon has effects on this gemstone.

•Pearl earrings should be kept in a separate box so as to ensure no scratches from other hard Jewellery and diamond. 
•Silk/nylon threads can go weak due to wear and tear of many years and should be restrung every couple of years to make  sure they are in good shape.
•Pearls should be laid in horizontal layer with padding in between to avoid friction due it rubbing against each other.

Dont’s Of Pearl Gemstone:

Pearl Jewellery like rings and bracelets should not be used on a daily basis in order to avoid wear and tear.
•One should not use perfume sprays after wearing pearl Jewellery. 
•Avoid oiling hair or using hair sprays while wearing any Pearl earrings as it will damage its luster.
•One should not use any chemicals for cleaning pearl Jewellery as the surface will get damaged permanently by harsh chemicals.
•Pearls should not be rubbed with abrasive cloth in order to avoid scratches on the surface.
•It should not be immersed in detergent liquid or solution for  cleaning as it will damage the texture.
•It should not be kept in dry condition or air tight containers as pearls brittle due to its organic nature.

Difference Between Natural, Cultured, Freshwater and Shell pearls



Pearls are semi-precious stones which are found in sea waters and is organic in nature. They are quite fragile and measures only 3.5 on the Moh’s hardness scale. Pearls are formed naturally when an irritant enters and gets lodged in an oyster’s soft inner body by accident. This causes a discharge of a crystalline substance which helps to form layers around the irritant until a pearl is formed.

Pearl gemstones are usually found in colors such as gray, white, black, purple and red. They are associated with the moon and signify peace, harmony, insight, spirituality and happiness. Pearl gemstones are beautiful in appearance and used in nuptial as well as engagement jewelries. Pearl gemstone is also helpful to those individuals who suffer from depression and mental issues.

No one knows when the pearl was first discovered. They are the world’s earliest gems and was thought to be revealed by chance when people had gone looking for food along the shores of the sea. For centuries, pearls have been a symbol of purity because of its white color. In the ancient Roman history, around the 1st century B.C., King Julius Ceaser declared that Pearls belonged to the ruling royal classes only and to be considered as a status symbol.

Natural Pearl stones:


As the name suggests, they are pearls made naturally from the oysters in the sea beds and hence very rare. It also takes a long time in the creation of a natural pearls which is the reason for its high demand and price.

Cultured Pearl stones:


They are produced artificially to meet the high mandate of pearl gemstone in absence of rare natural pearls. Here pearl beads are manually entrenched inside the mollusk and likely situations have been shaped so that pearl gemstone can grow inside the mollusk. This enables the discharge of a crystalline substance which helps to form layers around the irritant until a pearl is formed.

A Japanese by the name of Kokichi Mikimoto created the first cultured pearls in 1893 through the artificial process. The cultured pearl industry    grew   many folds since then and made up for the lack of natural pearl supply. Cultured Pearl stone can be further classified into Freshwater pearl gemstone and Saltwater Pearl Gemstone.

Fresh Water Pearl Gemstone:


These pearls are grown inside fresh water sources found mainly in lakes, rivers and ponds of china. They are also known as Akoya pearl stone and have brilliant luster, are typically white and perfectly round. They are a favorite among brides and jeweler & fashion designers.

Saltwater Pearl Gemstone:


They are grown in the sea or lakes of Japan and China. The most popular color of saltwater pearl is white, cream and gray. South Sea pearls which is a type of saltwater pearl stone They are the largest and rarest pearls and therefore expensive They are known for their luster and rich color. They come in glossy white, silky silver, champagne, creamy pink colors. They are also produced in Australia, Indonesia and are green, pink, black and purple in color.

Shell Pearls:


The inner lining of oyster shells is grounded into a fine powder. Then it is shaped, dyed and coated with natural pearl nacre and a protective coating is given to it. This coating also provides luster and shine. Since they are made artificially, quality varies. However, it is beautiful and much less expensive than saltwater pearls. Also, they are more durable than cultured and freshwater pearls.
